Shunting signals: These signals are used to operate cars on the specified track inside the station yard without guidance (white light row type).
Temporary signals: These signals are erected when slow speed operation is necessary due to track failure or other reasons, and use reflective materials.
Special signals: These signals are used to urgently stop trains in unexpected locations using flares, warning sounds (accident warning audible signals), and flashing red lights (obstruction warning indicators).
(1) Installation of main signals
Home and departure signals are installed according to the following methods.
Route signalling system
This system installs home and departure signals at each entry or exit route, and signals are displayed only when the routes are open. Accordingly, speed restrictions and other operating conditions are handled by the driver. Signals for main lines (through tracks) are installed at each route. However, when side tracks have two or more routes, signals may either be installed at each route or one signal may be used and entry and exit routes indicated using route indicators.
Wayside signals in Japan are installed according to this method.
* Speed signalling system
This system uses a single signal device for both home and departure signal routes, and displays signals in accordance with route speed restrictions and other operating conditions. The cab signal system uses this method.
However, since wayside signals can only display a limited number of signals, speed limits within routes are normally displayed by speed indicators. Also, when there are two or more exit routes for a single departure signal, the exit route is displayed by a direction indicator.
